1. Follow children’s interest with an integrated approach

As children develop an interest in a topic it is incorporated by teachers across a number of curriculum areas to extend children’s knowledge and skills following the children’s interest.  This approach provides opportunities for the learning interest to be incorporated in creativity provide investigative opportunities and communicative skills plus more as well as depositions such as curiosity and persistence among others. Take for example recently the children began to have an interest in their environment in particular the farms that they pass on the way to the centre. To extend the children’s interest this topic was explored through the paintings the children had done of farm animals, we sang songs about farm animals, shared farm books and had some imaginative play with farm animals set up outside. The children were very engaged and teachers extended the children’s knowledge through play incorporating different learning outcomes.

2. Understand that children learn differently and are unique individuals

Children learn in different ways and at different paces. They have their own identity that has strengths and weaknesses to be identified. Children are all good at something and these strengths need to be recognised and celebrated. Some children will be naturally very good at mathematics, other children musically minded whilst there may be children who have a deep and natural understanding of feelings and motivations. Building on the children’s strengths and interest will provide children with confidence and encourage them to contribute to the group and further deepen their learning and understandings. We welcome diversity and for everyone to be treated equally in our learning environment.

3. Value working in partnerships with families

We value the partnership that is developed between families and teachers.  We are a community to help your child grow and develop together.  As each child is individual and unique so too are their families who bring values, beliefs and experiences that provide critical links between home and the centre.  Sharing of information about special events, culture, milestones and challenges provide more consistency and is complementary to the child.  We invite you to complete your child's communication book and speak with a teacher at any stage of the day with concerns and success stories.  A completed daily routine and activities are displayed in each room.

Play Based Learning

A play-based program is developed with close interactions with the children in the group and is directed by the children’s interests alongside with the teacher’s developmental goals. A play based program supports and promotes children’s curiosity, overall well-being, is actively engaging and supports social interactions and communication.  In these are the learning's of essential developmental and life skills and can be learnt and trialed through play including; social skills such as negotiations, language as well as cognitive concepts including problem solving and exploration to assist in critical processing skills being established and discovered.

Play based learning occurs with both child-initiated and teacher led. This approach extends the child’s exploration and critical thinking.
